The Hog

The Hog is one of those strains that’s popular on both sides of the Atlantic, although its origins are believed to have been in Tennessee, where it travelled to Amsterdam via southern California. It’s a cross between a Hindu Kush and an Afghani strain, putting it firmly in the Indica camp. Judges at the 2002 High Times Cannabis Cup recognised its special qualities by awarding it first place in the Indica section.

The Hog strain has a distinctly hash-like smell and its flavour contains notes of sweet grapes and skunk. The high is as you’d expect from a strongly Indica strain – fast-acting, narcotic and with a tendency to couchlock. Medically, this weed is good for muscular pain and insomnia.

The Hog seeds produce plants of between 90 and 110 centimetres in height and it grows quite bushy with fat leaves. The buds are large and roundish in shape and the THC level has been measured in the lab at 16.1 percent.

Indoors, The Hog does best in a SOG set up combined with a hydro growing medium. It’s quite easy to grow and the flowering period is from eight to 10 weeks. You can expect to harvest between 400 and 500 grams per square metre.

This plant’s origins in the mountains of the Hindu Kush and Afghanistan mean it’s quite hardy so you can grow it in the cooler climate of northern Europe as long as you make sure frost doesn’t get to it.

The Hog is a good choice for novice gardeners and for those who love an Indica hit. Experienced growers choose it for its reliable harvests and its heavily sedative high.
